MUSEE DE LA PREHISTOIRE

Our proposal for the new prehistory museum in Carnac went beyond a simple building to create an urban, landscaped meeting place for museums, forming the new entrance to the town centre. The building was organised into four pavilions with flexible shapes. Working with the architects, we devised an itinerary that begins at the entrance to the museum, where visitors can see the alignment of the menhirs engraved in the ground along the entire length of the building, with a central fault running through it. For us, this fault symbolises not only the Carnac area that runs through the museum, but also the journey through time from the seventh millennium BC to the present day. The fault leads to a monumental staircase leading to the exhibition and a view of the Tumulus Saint-Michel. As visitors climb the steps, they are transported back thousands of years to the prehistoric megaliths they have come to discover. The permanent looped tour is divided on either side of this rift in time, which you cross in the middle of the exhibition to move from the time of the archaeological digs to the time of their interpretations: scientific, poetic, symbolic, etc.

Notre proposition pour le nouveau musée de la préhistoire à Carnac proposait au-delà d’un simple bâtiment, un espace de rencontre, urbain, paysager et muséal, formant la nouvelle entrée du centre-bourg. Le bâtiment était organisé selon quatre pavillons aux formes souples. Avec les architectes nous avons réfléchi à un parcours commençant dès l’entrée du Musée, où le visiteur perçoit les alignement des menhirs engravé au sol, sur toute la longueur du bâtiment traversé par une faille centrale. Cette faille symbolise, pour nous, à la fois le territoire de Carnac qui traverse le musée, mais également le voyage temporel à effectuer du septième millénaire avant notre ère, jusqu’à nos jours. La faille aboutit sur un escalier monumental menant à l’exposition et à la vue sur le Tumulus Saint-Michel. Pendant l’ascension des marches, le visiteur gravit les millénaires qui le séparent des mégalithes préhistoriques qu’il vient découvrir. Le parcours permanent imaginé en boucle se répartit de part et d’autre de cette faille du temps, que l’on traverse au milieu de l’exposition pour passer du temps des fouilles archéologique, au temps de leurs interprétations : scientifiques, poétiques, symboliques etc.
